Last night I went to Rock Valley to eat dinner with the family for Misi and Dave's birthdays. It was a very nice dinner with some good stories and laughs as always. Jenni didn't go with me because she was out of town, so I drove up there and back by myself. I don't mind driving anywhere by myself because of one reason. Music. I love to listen to music. One of my favorite things to do, especially when I am alone in the car, it to crank that stereo and sing along as loud as you can. I really gets the tension out and relieves stress for me. The key is to have the music so loud that when you sing as loud as you can, you still can't hear yourself. I do this because I know I can't sing worth a lick and I'd rather listen to the professional than myself but I can't help singing along.
Because of this long drive by myself, it got me to thinking and reflecting about things. Travis, Nicole and I like to ask each other "What if" questions. Really deep ones that you have to think about and discuss your opinions on. One of his best questions is "If you could have any superpower, what would it be? But the superpower can't be anything like flying or lasers shooting out of your eyes or anything like that. It has to be a minor one." One of his friend's answers was that every time he snapped his fingers, his teeth would be freshly cleaned like he just brushed them. So think about that question and let me know what your's would be. Another question we asked each other, and one that I was thinking about on this drive was, "If you had to get rid of one of your senses what would it be and why? And what sense is the most important to you?"
For me, the first part is easy. Taste. I would get rid of taste. I like eating good tasting food, but think how much easier life would be without taste. Of course, a general rule to food is the good tasting stuff isn't good for you and veggies and healthy food isn't that great to eat. So you could eat all healthy food all of the time and it would never bother you. You would never crave anything like cheesecake or ice cream because you couldn't taste them so it wouldn't matter. And you would be better off for it.
The one one sense I couldn't live without is hearing. There is too much tied to hearing. Sound is a very powerful thing. For me, songs put me in a different mind state. Some songs make you sad, some happy, some aggressive (good for lifting and running), some make you relax, etc. Not all senses can to that. Also, memories are tied to music. Certain songs remind you of where you heard it first or what you were doing when a certain song was on. Lots of bands and songs remind me of people. For instance, when I listen to Led Zeppelin it reminds me of Dave Jennings and Derrick Henry. Incubus reminds me of Natester and Marc Anstine. AC/DC reminds me of Matt. How could I ever forget riding to and from the Remsen Swimming Pool, sitting on the Impala's blazing hot vinyl seats that baked in the sun (luckily on the way back you could put your wet towel down first even though I swear steam would rise from it while doing so), windows all the way down blowing your eyelids and mouth open, and having your ear drums burst and bleed because the AC/DC was blasting as loud as the 6x9 speakers in the back would allow? Ah, the memories. Mark trained and educated me as we listened to music in the car. Every time a song came on the radio he asked me who played it. I got pretty good at it. I have done the same to Jenni. She might not like the song on the radio, but she can tell you who is playing it. Try it on her sometime. She's good.
I have another assignment for you. You have to come up with a Greatest Hits CD. Mark has made lots of them. The lists are usually different for every CD. The rules to this CD are:
1. 12 of your favorite songs from your 12 favorite bands of all time.
2. Only one song per band.
So it's the best of the best. Not necessarily your favorite songs of all time, you might like a song from a one hit wonder. But the best songs from the best bands of all time (in your opinion). Think hard about it and choose carefully. Some bands and songs will be tougher than others. Like trying to pick your favorite Beatles or Zeppelin song of all time, are you kidding? Nearly impossible for me. I will post my list soon. It will take more thought and research.
So to recap, your homework is......
1. If you could have a minor super power, what would it be and why? (I will determine if the superpower is minor or not.)
2. If you had to get rid of one sense, what would it be and why?
3. Make a list of your favorite songs from your favorite bands of all time.
Post your answers and lists on this blog.

Good work, good lists. Keep them coming. Matt, do you remember what I was talking about with those trips to Remsen?
Mike's
12 from 12
Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
The Beatles - Norwegian Wood
Nirvana - All Apologies
Incubus - Stellar
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras
Pearl Jam - Given to Fly
Oasis - Talk Tonight
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Wet Sand
Jack Johnson - No Other Way
Stone Temple Pilots - Creep
The Doors - The End
Tool - Eulogy
A very difficult list to make for me. Lots of great bands I had to leave off the list. If I was on a deserted island and could only listen to music from 12 groups, these would be the 12. Seeing other people's lists is a good way to expand your musical knowledge.
Keep them coming. I already said what sense I would want to lose first. My superpower... Whatever conditioning and strength I have achieved by working out, I would never loose. Only improve.
Here's a partial response to the "homework"
My superpower would be to have total, instant recall to the entire set of Encyclpedia Britanica. My definition of a superpower is something that heros use to help other people. So if you wanted to know something, just ask...!
I object to perfect hand eye coordination being accepted as a MINOR superpower. I think that is MAJOR.
Cole says his superpower would be to be able to make anyone laugh, anytime.
Here's how I would rank my senses:
1. sight
2. hearing
3. touch
4. smell
5. taste
Even though there are many unpleasing smells out there, they tell you something. Like, "Stay away!" or time to throw out the cottage cheese.
We've had a lot of fun talking about these things in the family and with coworkers. Thanks for stoking the the conversation fires and for giving one's mind something to turn over during those times of monotony.
Songs will be forthcoming.
Those are both very good superpowers. Making someone laugh at anytime could come in handy. And don't worry about the hand eye coordination for Matt. Even that won't help his golf game enough.
This is Mark's
1 Superpower. That every time I walked out of the house, I wouldn’t have to worry about the “little” hygiene things. No ear wax, no nose hairs hangin’, fresh pits, no uni-brow, clean drawers and socks, shoes tied, fly “flied”.
2 I think I would have to give up my sense of smell. I think that over half of the time the things you smell are bad anyway. Skunks, John Morrell on the way to work, that “fresh” country air. Of course I would miss the smells of mom’s kitchen and a couple of women’s perfume, but other than that, I could do without I think. Imagine. No more BO, farts, never been cleaned public bathrooms, fish, and following Matt or Mike into the bathroom and trying to hold your breath for a 15 minute shower.
3 In no particular order
1. Audioslave - Be Yourself
2. Bob Marley and the Wailers - No Woman, No Cry
3. Dave Matthews Band-Ants Marching
4. Foo Fighters - Best of You
5. Jane’s Addiction - Jane Says
6. Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
7. Lenny Kravitz - Always on The Run
8. Stone Temple Pilots - Art School Girl
9. Pearl Jam - Last Kiss
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can’t Stop
11. Shinedown - Fly From the Inside
12. U2 - With or Without You
(this changed about 18 times while I was doing the list, by the way)
This is from the Hansen's.
I asked Kyle and Jerod your questions about what sense to give up, and a minor super power. Kyle said he would give up his sight as his other senses would get better, he said. Jerod said he'd give up taste. I said I'd give up smell, not to smell stinky farms and it would also impact my eating, in that I wouldn't get much pleasure out of it and that would be better for my weight.
Minor super power- Kyle said to have a great complexion (I should have said that). Jerod said to be able to see through hands that block his basketball shots, and I said to either have a photographic memory or to remember names and faces of those I meet.
Superpower: I could give myself 8 full hours of sleep at least 4 times a week with a simple incantation. (Is this too much?)
12 from 12
Sublime-- What I Got
Bright Eyes-- Bowl of Oranges
Bran Van 3000-- Drinkin' in LA
Eels-- Susan's House
Kimya Dawson-- Caving In
Ben Folds-- The Luckiest
Ok 6 from 6. I will work on the other 6 later today.
Senses: I would get rid of taste.
Okay, my twelve from twelve in no particular order. . .
1. Zeppelin -Ramble On
2. The Who -Baba O'Reilly
3. Ravel -Bolero
4. U2 -With or Without You
5. Tool -46 and 2
6. Incubus -The "In" song
7. Floyd -One of These Days
8. They Might Be Giants -Hypnotist of Ladies
9. Mussorgsky -Night on Bald Mountain
10. John Williams -Theme from Indiana Jones
11. Wagner -Flight of the Valkyries
12. Pearl Jam -Off he Goes
Sense to give up? Smell. Easy. I have sinus infections so often that I can smell very little anyway. Sight is most important to me. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't see Lili's and Sara's faces every day.
Super power? Someone might throw a flag on this one saying its not minor, but anyway. . . I would want to be able to absorb, store, and then expend kinetic energy. Could you imagine absorbing kinetic energy every time your foot hit the ground while walking, and then being able to add it to something? You know how far I could throw something then? That would be cool in my book. Cool. In my book. Cool.
By the way, I'm throwing a flag on no one having any classical music. Lets appreciate the true masters of music just a little bit. Or maybe I just suck. Stuff it y'all! Cool. In my book.
I'm going to have to get back to you about the 12 of 12, but here something for the rest.
I would give up my sense of touch, because of the following reasons:
1. I don't think at this point in my life I'd be likely to burn or hurt myself by touching something I would be aware that might hurt me by touching it.
2. I have a serious problem with texture. I can't eat things because of their texture.
3. I wouldn't miss the scratchy feeling of wool or sweaters in the winter.
4. I love food too much to miss it's smell and taste.
Superpower: Ability to read minds. I seriously think this would help me in my job right now. You know if you're around young kids/teenagers you learn how stupid the can be and how they will really speak without thinking. I think if you could know what they were thinking then you could deal with them a little better. Plus this would be useful being married so you wouldn't be in arguments all the time, you could please your boss and mother-in-law, and you would'nt have to worry about what you look like/what you're wearing because if someone thinks it's bad you'll already know.
12 of 12 later.....
Keep the comments coming. Although I would be throwing some flags on the superpower answers. Absorbing kinetic energy to use at your leisure and reading people's minds are definitely not "minor" superpowers. Both are definitely major. Although they are good powers to have. I appreciate the input. Remember, the songs are your 12 favorite bands, and your favorite song from each of the bands, not your 12 favorite songs of all time.

Minor Super power... To see infrared. I could drive at night and scare the bejesus out of my passengers. Ohh and I could do home energy audits on houses and make the world greener, cause I would be able to see like the predator, Ohhhh Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
One sense to lose....
Thermoception is the sense of heat and the absence of heat (cold) by the skin and including internal skin passages. Since I would have “predator vision” I could lose that one be in good shape. Muh ha ha ha
