The 4th of July weekend is officially in the books. And what a great weekend it was. Nate, my roommate from college (and one of my best friends) and his wife, Kristy, came to visit this weekend. I was really appreciated them making the trip. They live down by Burlington in the southeast corner of Iowa, so they went corner to corner. Not a short trip. They came Friday afternoon and we gave them the dime tour of our house and the Sioux City area. That evening we went and ate at the Outback with the Dunne clan.
Everyone came over afterwards for some super exciting snakes, sparklers, and confetti sticks. Wow was it exciting! Jeremy was the responsible adult when he made sure everyone was a safe distance back before he flung colored paper strips into the air. All paper cuts were avoided and no one was injured. Travis got off of work just in time to watch the grand finale of paper being flung into a ring of sparklers. That's what you get when you live in Iowa where fireworks are illegal and you live next to a firefighter.
Saturday morning Travis and I ran in the Pump and Run 5k race in Dakota Dunes. It started to sprinkle just as we started and began pouring rain before we had made it two blocks. It was actually really fun to run in the pouring rain. The only bad part was quitting and standing out there with the cold wind blowing on your wet clothes. Not the warmest. We had a good showing at the race. Travis had to make sure to rub in the fact that I was in the older age bracket before the race (I am 30, he is still 29). Well, it paid off for me in the end. He got 2nd in his age group. I won my age group. at this point I must unfortunately point out the fact that I was the only one in my age group. That is how I won. Travis ran 3 minutes faster than I did. I did set a personal best with my race time. So it was a good morning.
That afternoon, Nate, Travis and I went to Kingsley and golfed. Can't get much better than that no matter how you are playing. Jeremy came down later and we tried to qualify for the horse race next weekend. We were 2 under with 3 to play and fell apart and finished even. Not pretty. Oh, well. There is always next year.
After golf Jenni, Kristy, Nate, and I went and ate at Sweet Fanny's down on 4th street. It's a cool little bar with pretty good food. We then hung out until around 9:00 and went to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the UFC fights. Cory & Mindy, Jeremy & Gina, and Mike & Heather Vos were there to meet us. The fights were good and we headed back to our house for a little bit. There was some music played, fences scaled, and and Elvis sighting. Then, the pregnant driver had had enough and shipped everyone home. Probably a good thing or it could have gotten really ugly.
The next day Nate and Kristy took off for home and that ended our awesome, action packed weekend. It was really nice to finally have people come over and hang out as well as spend the weekend with us. We definitely have enough room and appreciate all visitors.
The Le Tour the previous weekend was a blast as usual. There will be more stories and pictures of that later.
